National Standards – historical information
In 2017/18 he Ministry of Education removed the requirement for schools to report against National Standards and Ngā Whanaketanga Rumaki Māori.
The information and readings on this page may still be useful for historical purposes.
National Standards, now archived, came into effect in English-medium schools with students in years 1–8 in 2010. The standards set expectations that students needed to meet in reading, writing and mathematics in the first eight years at school. The standards described reference points or signposts of achievement at each year level. Assessing progress and achievement in relation to the standards was an integral part of teaching and learning across the New Zealand Curriculum from 2010.
These research articles were used as background papers in the development of the National Standards.
These articles were published after the introduction of National Standards:
National Standards, moderation and teacher learning (2011).
This paper, by Rosemary Hipkins and Edith Hodgen, discusses an analysis of teacher survey responses about school moderation practice in relation to its use in professional learning, and considers the implications of the findings in the light of a literature review on moderation and teacher learning. The paper was presented at the Symposium on Assessment and Learner Outcomes, Wellington, September 1–3, 2011.
