Text version of Teaching as Inquiry diagram

This is a flow chart diagram in the shape of a rectangle, and titled Teaching as Inquiry.

Working clockwise and starting at the top right, there are two overlapping ovals. One contains the word: "Teaching", the other contains the word: "Learning". There is one arrow going from the middle of these two ovals, pointing down to the bottom right to an oval containing the heading: "Learning Inquiry", followed by the words: "What happened as a result of the teaching, and what are the implications for future teaching?"

From this oval there are two lines ending in arrows. One line has the words along it: "Is there something I need to change?" and ends in an arrow and an oval in the top left of the flow chart. The other line has the words along it: "What are the next steps for learning?" and ends in an arrow and an oval at the bottom left of the flow chart.

The oval at the bottom left of the flow chart has the heading: "Focusing Inquiry", followed by the words: ‘What is important (and therefore worth spending time on), given where my students are at?’ A line goes from the top of this oval to the bottom of the next oval, which is at the top left.

Text version of He Puāwaitanga Harakeke, he Rito Whakakī Whāruarua diagram

This is an image of harakeke (flax plant) headed: "He Puāwaitanga Harakeke, he Rito Whakakī Whāruarua."

Various parts of the plant are labelled with the words:

Some parts of the plant (leaves, shoots, roots, and flowers) are coloured with different colours: black, purple, red, yellow, green, orange, pink, and brown.

At the bottom left is a box with explanations of the meanings of the colours.

  • Black – Emanates from ako.
  • Purple – Focused on learners as learners.
  • Red – Focused on teacher competence and confidence.
  • Yellow – Authentic.
  • Green – Focused on teacher inclinations and dispositions.
  • Orange – Captures tamaiti, whānau, hapū, community voice.
  • Pink – Captures ākonga potential and talent.
  • Brown – Informs planning and required targeted assistance.

There are three paragraphs of text at the top left with the words:

"He puāwai harakeke, he rito whakakī whāruarua is the articulation of Māori hopes and dreams that Māori knowledge and ways of understanding the world continue to flourish and be part of the future.

Realising the vision of "puāwaitanga harakeke" is based on a commitment to supporting Māori communities in their determination to flourish and grow, based on te reo Māori me ōna tikanga, within their unique landscapes. At the heart is the ability of local communities to replenish and regenerate those aspects of life that are important to them.

The pā harakeke provides an example of intergenerational growth and is a metaphor for the preservation of language, culture and aspirations of whānau, hapū and iwi – te pā tangata. Four parallels are drawn between te pā harakeke and te pā tangata:

  1. In order to flourish the young require nurturing and care.
  2. Success and growth are dependent on the provision of some key conditions.
  3. Practices that are mindful of the local environment will have a greater likelihood of success.
  4. Positive growth provides for future generations that are strong and resilient.
