IKAN has two sections: the interview and the written test. The interview involves two parts:
- saying the forward and backward counting sequences up to 32
- recognising written numerals and giving the number after and number before a given number.
The assessment materials required for the interview are:
- a sheet for recording student results that also contains the interview questions.
- a set of numeral cards containing the questions to use with students.
The written test consists of five banks of questions that are designed to assess key knowledge, and is organized in the following way:
- Bank One Advanced Counting – Early Additive Transition
- Bank Two Early Additive– Advanced Additive Transition
- Bank Three Advanced Additive - Advanced Multiplicative Transition
- Bank Four Advanced Multiplicative – Advanced Proportional Transition
- Bank Five Advanced Proportional + Progression
The assessment materials required for the written test are:
- questions: 5 banks of 8 questions – shown with an OHP or Powerpoint
- a sheet for students to record their answers on
- a sheet for recording student results.
