IKAN (Knowledge Assessment for Numeracy)
Assessment Area Mathematics-Numeracy
Year level 3-10
NZ origin? Yes
Standardised? No , although national performance data is available.
Administration to individual or group? Either - the interview can be conducted with individuals or small groups of students. The written test is usually conducted with groups of students, with the Flash or mp4 file shown on an OHP.
What does it assess? The written test assesses students’ knowledge of Forward and Backward Number Word Sequences, fractions, place value and basic facts.
Purpose Enables assessment of the knowledge stages students are operating at across all five knowledge domains, known as the global knowledge stage.
Validity Items are tested for content validity.
Reliability There is evidence of test/retest reliability.
What measures does it give? Stages for number knowledge which are linked to the curriculum levels.
How long does it take to administer? Depends on the stage of the student, from 5 to 20 minutes.
How much training is needed? Careful training in test administration and assessment. Online PLD is available here: http://www2.nzmaths.co.nz/Numeracy/ONPD/M4/12.aspx
Scoring and data analysis A strategy stage/curriculum level is able to be identified. A record sheet for each student will highlight key learning areas for each student.
Does it provide 'what next' strategies? Yes , there are activities suggested for each stage in the Numeracy Development Projects books, available from the NZ Maths website.
Is it available in te reo Maori? Yes
Cost? No cost. Project materials can be accessed on the NZ Maths website.
Author, date of publication and publisher Materials for the Numeracy Project written and published through the Ministry of Education from 2002.

Further Information

IKAN has two sections: the interview and the written test.

The interview involves two parts:

  • saying the forward and backward counting sequences up to 32
  • recognising written numerals and giving the number after and number before a given number.

The assessment materials required for the interview are:

  • a sheet for recording student results that also contains the interview questions.
  • a set of numeral cards containing the questions to use with students.

The written test consists of five banks of questions that are designed to assess key knowledge, and is organized in the following way:

  • Bank One Advanced Counting – Early Additive Transition
  • Bank Two Early Additive– Advanced Additive Transition
  • Bank Three Advanced Additive - Advanced Multiplicative Transition
  • Bank Four Advanced Multiplicative – Advanced Proportional Transition
  • Bank Five Advanced Proportional + Progression

The assessment materials required for the written test are:

  • questions: 5 banks of 8 questions – shown with an OHP or Powerpoint
  • a sheet for students to record their answers on
  • a sheet for recording student results.
