Students respond orally to seven practice items, consisting of single letters, followed by 54 non-words listed in order of difficulty.

The non-word items in the test all conform to acceptable letter-word correspondences and thus are equivalent to "regular" words.

The items cover the range of phonemes necessary for reading, and range from easy digraphs and three-letter non-words to more difficult non-words.
