What does it assess? It measures students' instructional or independent reading levels.
Purpose Captures students' progress in reading fluency, retelling abilities and comprehension within and beyond the text.
Validity There is some evidence of validity.

What measures does it give? Pre level 1: Six assessments that focus on Oral Literacy, Alphabetic Knowledge, Phonological Awareness, Phonics and Concepts about Print. Consists of two cards and one assessment sheet. Instructional or independent reading levels to level 14, reading and reading-age levels thereafter to level 30 using the Fry Readability Formula. Post-Level 30: Six cards for independent readers – reading ages from 12 to 14 years.
How long does it take to administer? 10 - 15 minutes per student. Note - There are three procedure cards: one for Pre-level 1, one for Levels 1 to 30 and one for Post-Level 30.
How much training is needed? It is essential to become familiar with the PM Benchmark Reading Assessment Resource texts and procedures before administering the resource. The Teacher’s Resource Book and online resources contain information about the balanced reader as well as a detailed FAQ section.
Scoring and data analysis Student record sheets and pro formas (downloadable) allow the recording of fluency, knowledge and skills, strategies and a scored retell. Instructions for the analysis of information are given in the Teachers' Resource Book. Via the links on the Cengage website there are options which simplifies the recording of reading records and generation of student profile data. The software automatically calculates data such as reading accuracy rate, error rate and self-correction rate. A variety of graph options are also included to demonstrate the progress of individual students, class groups, whole classes and the whole school.
Does it provide 'what next' strategies? Yes – The teachers' resource book and links online have recommendations for future development.
