Junior Assessment of Mathematics (JAM)

What does it assess? Achievement in relation to levels one and two of the New Zealand curriculum and the mathematics standards for years 1-3 for number strategies, number knowledge, algebra, geometry, and measurement.
Purpose JAM is designed to support an Overall Teacher Judgment for National Standards. The number modules replace the diagnostic interview (NumPA). It does not assess all strands or all concepts in the mathematics knowledge domains or strands.
Validity Items are tested for content validity.
Reliability There is evidence of test/retest reliability.
What measures does it give? Curriculum levels and mathematics standards are given, as well as Number Framework stages where relevant.
How long does it take to administer? The time taken will vary depending on the student being interviewed and how many modules are being tested at the time. There are eleven modules, which can be used separately or combined, as needed. It is not expected that a student will complete the entire interview in one sitting.
How much training is needed? Some training in test administration and assessment.
Scoring and data analysis A curriculum level/Number Framework stage is identified. A record sheet for each student tracks progress and will highlight key learning areas.
Does it provide 'what next' strategies? Yes , there are activities for the various stages available at the nzmaths website.
Is it available in te reo Maori? No

Further Information

The eleven modules in the interview are each made up of a series of questions that increase in difficulty for Number Strategies, Number Knowledge, Patterns, Shape, and Length. Students move through these questions until an appropriate learning stage is determined for each module.
The assessment materials include:

  • the series of questions to ask
  • instructions outlining the actions to take, the words to say, and the decisions to make at key points in the assessment
  • recording sheets to document student responses.
